Comdirect Joint Account
The 100% digital joint account for couples and flatmates in Germany 2026
You and your partner open a joint account in Germany without a single branch visit, then split rent, groceries, and the electricity bill straight from the Comdirect app.
Each holder gets their own login, their own free Visa debit card, and a real-time push the moment either of you pays or transfers money.
Quick answer
The Comdirect joint account (Gemeinschaftskonto) costs €0 a month when you keep it active, or €4.90 otherwise, and the two of you open it online without a branch visit. Each holder gets a separate login, a free Visa debit card, and a real-time push the moment either partner pays or transfers money. Both Visa debit cards pull cash at any machine carrying the Visa logo, free up to your monthly allowance and €4.90 per withdrawal above it. A girocard at €1 a month drops that limit at around 5,000 Cash Group machines. Your balance carries German deposit protection up to €100,000, and one app splits rent, groceries, and bills between two people. Open as new customers by 18 October 2026 and Comdirect pays 5% back on Visa debit card purchases, up to €50 a month across the first 3 months, for a maximum of €150.

Apply Together NowWhat both of you need to apply
- Both partners registered at a German address (Anmeldung)
- Each holder at least 18 years old
- Passport or European ID card for both people
- Full legal name of each applicant
- Citizenship details for both
- Your German residential address from the Anmeldung
- A reachable email address
- A mobile number for the video check
Opening your shared account, step by step
Both holders go through the process online. Here are the six steps from application to card:
Submit the online application
Fill in the joint application and pick your Comdirect login details. You'll get a shared IBAN and an order confirmation right after you send it.
Check both inboxes
Comdirect emails the contract documents to each holder separately, so both of you have your own copy on file.
Both verify by VideoIdent
Each partner runs their own VideoIdent call, about five to ten minutes with a passport or ID card. No post office, no branch.
Set up photoTAN
One to two working days later, each holder switches on photoTAN in online banking to approve transfers securely.
PINs arrive by post
For safety, the card PINs come in the mail separately from the cards, one PIN per holder.
Cards land in your mailbox
Around four working days on, the two Visa debit cards arrive in separate letters, one for each of you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does opening a joint account at Comdirect take?
Plan for about a week. Once both partners finish VideoIdent and switch on photoTAN, online banking goes live in one to two working days, and the Visa cards reach you roughly a week later.
Can my partner and I bank separately on the same account?
Yes. Each holder gets a personal login and password, and either of you can transfer, pay, and check the balance alone. Every move shows up for both partners in real time.
Do we both need to verify our identity?
Yes, both holders complete a separate VideoIdent call. Comdirect sends each of you your own email with the link, and neither video check needs a branch or post office.
Can we cap how much one partner spends?
No. A Comdirect joint account gives both holders equal access with no built-in spending limit. If you want a hard cap, keep a personal account for individual spending and use the joint one for shared bills.
Does each partner get their own card?
Yes, one free Visa debit card per holder, both tied to the shared balance. You can add a physical girocard for €1 per card a month if a shop only takes girocard.
Does the cashback offer count for a joint account?
Yes, Comdirect lists the Gemeinschaftskonto among the accounts the offer covers. Every purchase either of you makes with a Visa debit card, in a shop or online, earns 5% back. Comdirect measures that on a purchase value of up to €1,000 a month, which holds the credit to €50 in any month and €150 over the first 3 months. Only purchases count. Cash withdrawals, wallet top-ups, crypto, gambling, and betting are excluded, so a month where both cards stay in the drawer pays out nothing. The offer runs for new customers, and you agree to Commerzbank AG marketing emails during the application and hold that consent for the first 3 months. The money lands on your joint account on banking days, and your completed application has to reach Comdirect by 18 October 2026.
How do we get cash in and out?
Two routes, and the free one depends on the card. Each Visa debit card takes cash from any machine showing the Visa logo, free up to the monthly allowance that comes with your account model, then €4.90 per withdrawal. A girocard at €1 per card a month removes that ceiling at around 5,000 Cash Group machines run by Commerzbank, Deutsche Bank, HypoVereinsbank, and Postbank. Deposits go to a Commerzbank machine, three free each calendar year and €4.90 after that, since Comdirect keeps no branches.
Is a joint account good for paying rent together?
Yes, that's what most couples and flatmates use it for. Set up SEPA direct debits (Lastschrift) for rent, Nebenkosten, and utilities, and both holders watch every payment leave the account.
What if one of us has no Anmeldung yet?
You'll have to wait. Both holders need a registered German address (Anmeldung) before Comdirect opens the joint account. Once the second partner registers at the Bürgeramt, you can apply together.
Can we each keep our own tax ID on the account?
Yes. A joint account has two named holders, so you each keep your own German tax ID (Steuer-ID); opening the account doesn't merge them. That helps if you and your partner file your taxes separately.
What happens to the account if we break up?
You close it together or turn it into a single account, and both signatures are needed either way. Talk to Comdirect support first; any balance left is divided the way you agreed, or split evenly if you never set a rule.
One of us is moving abroad. Can we keep the joint account?
It depends on your setup. If one holder leaves Germany, contact Comdirect to update the address and holder details or to convert the account. A German address (Anmeldung) is part of the opening conditions, so review the account once one of you deregisters.
How do we block a card if it gets lost?
Freeze it straight away in the Comdirect app or online banking. You can also call the 24-hour service line or the central German blocking number, 116 116. Blocking is free and takes effect at once.
Is our money safe with Comdirect?
Yes. Comdirect is a brand of Commerzbank AG and sits under German deposit protection, which covers up to €100,000 per customer. Every login and transfer is secured with photoTAN two-factor authentication, and BaFin and the ECB regulate the bank.
What does the joint account cost per month?
Nothing in a month where one holder receives €700 in income, makes 3 Apple Pay or Google Pay payments, or runs one trade plus one savings plan. The account is also free if one holder is under 28 and studying, at school, in an apprenticeship, or on an internship. Miss every one of them and the fee is €4.90 for that month.
