Quick answer
The Comdirect JuniorDepot is a free custody account for children aged 0 to 17, opened and run by a parent or legal guardian in the child's name. Every buy or sell costs €4.90 plus 0.25% of the order value, at least €9.90 and never more than €59.90. Savings plans are the cheaper route at 1.50% per execution, and Comdirect pays a €100 bonus when you start one within three months of opening and let it run at least once. Because the depot belongs to the child, capital gains of up to €1,000 a year stay tax-free under the child's own allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the account holder of the JuniorDepot?
The JuniorDepot is held in the child's name. The parents or legal guardians manage the depot until the child turns 18. At that point, the child gains full control over the account and its assets.
What happens when my child turns 18?
When your child reaches legal age (18), the JuniorDepot is automatically converted into a regular Comdirect Depot. Your child then has full control over the investments and can manage the portfolio independently.
Can I withdraw money from the JuniorDepot?
Since the JuniorDepot belongs to the child, parents can only manage the assets in the child's best interest. Withdrawals must be used for the benefit of the child. Consult a tax advisor for specific situations.
How does the tax-free allowance work for children?
Each child has their own Sparer-Pauschbetrag (saver's lump sum) of up to €1,000 per year. Capital gains up to this amount are tax-free. You can set up a Freistellungsauftrag in your child's name to ensure automatic tax exemption.
Can both parents manage the JuniorDepot?
Yes, both parents (or legal guardians) can manage the JuniorDepot. Both must consent to the account opening. Access to the online banking is set up for the parent who completes the VideoIdent verification.
Which ETFs are recommended for a JuniorDepot?
For long-term wealth building, broadly diversified world ETFs (e.g., MSCI World, FTSE All-World) are popular choices. You can run them as savings plans from €1 a month, at 1.50% of the amount invested per execution. The long investment horizon makes equity-heavy strategies particularly suitable for children.
